Lil' Picasso May 2025: From Japanese Waves to Filipino Paper Art - Celebrating Asian Pacific Heritage Month

Dear Parents,

This May, our Lil’ Picasso students will dive into the world of Asian Pacific art and culture in honor of Asian Pacific Heritage Month. We’re thrilled to introduce them to a diverse range of artists who have celebrated nature, culture, and imagination through their unique styles. Here’s a look at the inspiring artists and projects your little ones will be exploring this month:

1. Hayao Miyazaki – Whimsical Animation

Our students will start their journey with Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary Japanese animator behind films like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. Known for his imaginative characters and lush landscapes, Miyazaki brings the natural world to life with a touch of magic.

2. Patrick Cabral – Paper Cut Animal Art

Next, we’ll look at Patrick Cabral, a contemporary Filipino artist known for his intricate paper-cut animals, which highlight endangered species with delicate detail and vibrant color.

3. Katsushika Hokusai – Iconic Waves and Nature

Moving to classical Japanese art, we’ll introduce students to Katsushika Hokusai, whose famous Great Wave off Kanagawa has become a global symbol of Japanese art. Hokusai’s prints capture the power and beauty of the ocean and nature.

4. Tomikichiro Tokuriki – Japanese Landscapes

Finally, we’ll explore the serene landscapes of Tomikichiro Tokuriki, a 20th-century Japanese printmaker known for his peaceful depictions of Kyoto’s temples and gardens.

Our Learning Goals for May

  • Cultural Awareness: Students will gain a greater appreciation for the rich artistic traditions of Japan and the Philippines.
  • Respect for Nature: Inspired by Cabral’s focus on endangered animals and Miyazaki’s themes of environmental harmony, students will learn about the beauty and importance of nature.

We look forward to seeing our Lil' Picasso's interpretations of these inspiring works, and we’re excited to celebrate the creativity and cultures of Asian and Pacific Island artists with them. Thank you for your support as we explore new worlds and ideas through art!
