Lil' Picasso December: Magical Christmas Art Inspired by Classic and Timeless Holiday Icons
by Jasmine Soumakian
Dear Parents,
This December, our Lil' Picasso's will celebrate the holiday season with a series of joyful and festive art projects inspired by Christmas classics and beloved artists. Through these imaginative creations, we’ll explore various artistic techniques and holiday symbols that bring warmth and cheer to the season. Here’s a look at what your little artists will be learning and creating:
1. Santa Portraits Inspired by Haddon Sundblom
Known as the artist behind Coca-Cola's famous Santa Claus illustrations, Haddon Sundblom brought the modern, jolly Santa to life. Students will draw their own Santa portraits inspired by Sundblom’s iconic rosy-cheeked, merry character. We’ll focus on facial expressions, bright colors, and shading to help children capture Santa’s joyful spirit. This project will introduce them to classic illustration techniques and holiday symbolism.
2. Patterned Snowman Inspired by Gustav Klimt
Gustav Klimt’s intricate, decorative style provides the perfect inspiration for a unique snowman! Students will add swirls, shapes, and patterns to their snowman, mimicking Klimt’s ornate details. Through this project, they’ll learn about pattern-making, color contrasts, and texture—creating a snowman as whimsical as it is unique.
3. Angel Mice Inspired by Raphael’s Cherubs
Raphael’s cherubs are a beloved part of Renaissance art, often seen gazing up in wonder. This month, our students will create adorable angel mice, drawing inspiration from Raphael's cherubs to capture the innocence and joy of the season. Using pastels and soft shading, students will create expressive faces and wings, learning about the basics of portrait art in a playful way.
4. Disney-Inspired Deer
Inspired by Disney’s classic woodland creatures, our students will create a sweet holiday deer, adding their own festive touches. Drawing on Disney’s smooth lines and expressive animal features, kids will practice drawing a deer’s face and body with large, gentle eyes and soft fur. This project will help them build confidence with animal shapes and proportions while creating a cozy, holiday-inspired piece.
