Lil' Picasso August 2025: Golden Portraits and Colorful Animals: Celebrating Art Nouveau and Der Blaue Reiters (The Blue Riders)

Dear Parents,

This August, our Lil' Picasso's will dive into the captivating world of Art Nouveau and the Blue Rider movement, creating projects inspired by four incredible artists: Gustav Klimt, Franz Marc, Paul Klee, and Alphonse Mucha. Each artist introduced new ways of expressing color, pattern, and emotion, giving our young artists a chance to explore these unique styles through imaginative projects. 

Meet the Artists and Their Projects

• Gustav Klimt (1862–1918)
  Known for his intricate patterns, shimmering golds, and expressive portraits, Austrian artist Gustav Klimt was a central figure of the Art Nouveau movement. His iconic works like The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I are filled with ornate details and luxurious textures. 

• Franz Marc (1880–1916)
  As a founding member of the Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group, German artist Franz Marc was known for his colorful, emotional depictions of animals, often painted in vivid blues, reds, and yellows. Marc believed colors had spiritual meanings, which he used to express the inner nature of his subjects. 

• Paul Klee (1879–1940)
  Swiss-German artist Paul Klee’s work blends surrealism, expressionism, and abstraction, often using whimsical shapes and symbols. His pieces like Senecio and Castle and Sun are known for their playful use of color and form. 

• Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939)
  Czech artist Alphonse Mucha was a leading figure in the Art Nouveau movement, famous for his elegant, decorative posters featuring flowing lines and floral motifs. His works, like The Seasons series, capture graceful, expressive forms.
